The right routine depends on where your car lives, how you use it and the standard you want to maintain. A garaged weekend car and a family SUV on rural roads won’t need the same schedule.
Regular washing and interior cleaning keep everyday dirt manageable. A professional detail gives you time and expertise for the areas a quick clean can miss. Paint polishing is a separate treatment, chosen for the condition of the finish rather than a date on the calendar.
A practical starting schedule
These are our starting recommendations. Adjust them when your car needs attention sooner.
| Type of care | Where we suggest starting |
|---|---|
| Exterior washing for a typical daily driver | Every two to four weeks |
| Exterior washing if you want it consistently tidy | Weekly |
| Rural roads, heavy use or persistent winter grime | Weekly or fortnightly, depending on conditions |
| Interior vacuuming and light cleaning | Regularly between washes; often weekly or fortnightly with pets, sand or family use |
| A more thorough interior clean | Around every two months, adjusted for use |
| Occasional professional detailing | Around every six months, with three to twelve months a useful range depending on condition and home care |
What changes the schedule in Auckland?
Outdoor parking exposes a car to more than road dirt. Trees, birds, coastal exposure and changing weather all influence how quickly it needs attention. Rural driving adds dust and mud; motorway use can leave stubborn road film on the lower panels.
Check the car itself rather than waiting for a reminder. Bird droppings, fresh spills and other concentrated contamination deserve prompt attention using a suitable cleaning method.
Protection can make the next wash easier, but even a coated car still needs cleaning and drying.
The interior deserves its own routine
Vacuuming before sand and grit build up makes maintenance easier. Lift the mats, move the seats safely to reach underneath, and pay attention to cupholders, seat rails and the areas you touch most.
Steering wheels, handles and switches collect oils and residue even when the cabin looks tidy. We favour a clean, natural finish rather than a heavy glossy dressing.
Spills, odours and stains shouldn’t wait for a six-month detail. Addressing them early gives you a better chance of resolving the source before it spreads or becomes harder to remove.
What happens if you leave it too long?
Dirt becomes more time-consuming to remove, stains can become established, and some contamination can damage the finish. The next visit may need to be a deeper reset rather than routine maintenance.
That doesn’t mean every dirty car needs polishing. We first establish what is dirt, what is bonded contamination and what is actual damage, then choose the appropriate treatment.
When does a professional detail make sense?
Book when your normal cleaning no longer gets the result you want, when you need a thorough reset, or when you simply don’t have the time to maintain the car.
A well-kept car may suit Signature. An Enhanced Detail gives more time to focus on an interior or exterior concern. Heavier soiling or substantial restoration needs a longer visit.
Prefer a car that stays consistently cared for?
The Car Care Club brings regular detailing to your home or workplace. We start from the condition of your vehicle, establish a suitable baseline and maintain it on a fortnightly, three-weekly or monthly schedule.

Common questions
Should my car be polished every six months?
Not automatically. Wash and maintain it regularly, then assess whether polishing is useful. Polishing removes a small amount of finish, so it should have a clear purpose.
Does a garaged car need less care?
Often, but use still matters. A garaged daily driver collects road grime and interior dirt even with less exposure while parked.
Is monthly detailing enough for a family car?
It can be. Heavy family use, pets or rural driving may suit a shorter interval, particularly if little cleaning happens between visits.
