Swirl marks are fine surface scratches that become especially noticeable in sunlight or under a bright inspection light. Together, they can make paint look hazy and reduce its depth and shine.

Many can be substantially improved through machine polishing. The right approach depends on the finish, the defects and the amount of correction the paint can safely support.

What causes swirl marks?

Marks commonly develop when dirt is dragged across the paint during washing, wiping or drying. Contaminated mitts, rough handling and dirty towels can all contribute. Contact car washes can also leave marks when grit is carried across the surface.

The circular appearance around a light doesn’t mean every scratch was made with a circular motion. Illumination makes groups of fine scratches stand out together.

What is paint correction?

Paint correction, sometimes called paint restoration, uses controlled polishing to improve defects in the finish. It removes a small amount of surface material to reduce the visibility of suitable marks and refine the appearance.

We start with washing and appropriate decontamination, then inspect the paint and test a suitable process. Preparation matters: contamination on the surface can interfere with polishing and the assessment of the finish.

Single-stage polishing or more involved correction?

A single-stage polish uses a suitable pad and product combination to improve lighter swirls, haze and gloss. It can make a substantial difference on appropriate paint without pursuing every deeper scratch.

Multi-stage correction allows a cutting stage followed by refinement. Depending on the vehicle, we may use a rotary for cutting and a dual-action machine for finishing. The method is chosen for the result and the paint, rather than using one machine for every car.

Localised sanding or touch-up refinement may be appropriate for specific defects. These are specialist decisions made after assessment, particularly where paint texture or a deeper mark is involved.

Why paint thickness and history matter

New and older cars can both have uneven paint thickness, previous repairs or existing polishing history. We inspect under suitable lighting, use thickness readings where appropriate and assess a test area.

A conventional paint gauge usually measures the overall coating system on a suitable panel, rather than isolating the clear coat. Readings guide the assessment alongside history, condition and the response to testing.

We aim for the best worthwhile improvement while keeping the finish healthy for future care.

Can every scratch be removed?

No. Some scratches are too deep to pursue safely, and damaged or failing clear coat can need repainting rather than further correction.

A scratch that catches a fingernail may be deeper, but that alone doesn’t prove it has gone through the clear coat. Avoid repeatedly scraping it to diagnose the damage.

Leaving a deep defect can be the right decision when removing it would take too much surrounding paint. We’ll explain that trade-off before the work becomes more aggressive.

Which service should you choose?

Gloss Enhancement, a light machine polish and wax, is $299. Cut, Polish & Protect, with more time for correction, is $449.

Intensive Paint Correction gives heavier defects more time, and full-day correction is available by assessment. Extensive jobs may need additional days, agreed beforehand.

Keep the improvement

After polishing, suitable protection and careful washing help maintain the finish. A coating can make cleaning easier, but a contaminated mitt or towel can still scratch the paint.

Common questions

Does wax remove swirls?

Some products can temporarily reduce their appearance, but lasting defect removal requires an appropriate correction process.

Will ceramic coating remove them?

No. Coating and correction have different roles. Prepare the finish to the standard you want before protecting it.

Will the swirls come back?

New marks can develop if the wash routine reintroduces them. Clean equipment, thorough rinsing and gentle drying help preserve the improvement.
